Foster, who has been under the microscope for his calls during Game 4 between the Pacers and Oklahoma City Thunder, has drawn passionate reactions from fans and analysts alike. However, Carlisle labeled this scrutiny as "terrible and unfair," asserting that it fails to acknowledge Foster’s decades-long reputation for quality officiating.
Foster, nicknamed "The Extender" due to a belief that teams trailing in a playoff series often win games he officiates—thus extending the series—has been part of the NBA officiating crew since the 1994-95 season. Carlisle highlighted his personal knowledge of Foster over their 30-year association, praising him as a “great official” who has consistently performed well in the playoffs.
The controversy stemmed in part from the physicality and high number of fouls called in Game 4, which featured 71 free throws combined between the two teams, including two flagrant fouls and two technical fouls. Oklahoma City edged Indiana 38-33 in free throw attempts and ultimately won the game 111-104, tying the series at 2-2. Thunder coach Mark Daigneault described the game as intensely physical and defended the referees’ management, noting both teams had ample opportunities at the line.
Yet, one moment that drew particular ire was an apparent missed offensive foul committed by Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander late in the fourth quarter. As Gilgeous-Alexander pushed off Pacers forward Aaron Nesmith while attempting to score, no foul was called, allowing the Thunder guard to make a pivotal go-ahead jumper. This sequence has been widely debated among fans and commentators.
Despite these criticisms, Carlisle refrained from delving into the specifics of the backlash, emphasizing instead that the harsh criticism of Foster was unwarranted.
