The Scottish wildcat, once teetering on the brink of extinction, is showing promising signs of recovery thanks to dedicated conservation efforts led by the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS). A recent report highlights the remarkable success of the Saving Wildcats project during its inaugural year in the Cairngorms National Park.
Once feared "functionally extinct" due to habitat loss, disease, and extensive interbreeding with feral domestic cats, the native wildcat population had dwindled to critical lows by 2018. The Saving Wildcats initiative aimed to reverse this decline by breeding wildcats in captivity and subsequently reintroducing them to their natural environment. Over the past three years, 46 captive-bred wildcats have been released into the wild, with encouraging survival rates and evidence of natural reproduction.
The first-year findings revealed that nearly all of the 19 released wildcats survived their initial 10 months, gaining an impressive average of 20% in body weight and showing minimal signs of injury or disease. While two kittens tragically died post-study due to road accidents and starvation, these instances underscore the ongoing challenges faced by the species in the wild.
Hybridisation with domestic cats remains a notable threat to the wild population’s genetic purity. To address this, the project partners with Cats Protection in trapping, neutering, and vaccinating feral cats within the region, having managed 132 cats to date. These efforts aim to curb the spread of domestic cat genes and diseases within wildcat populations.
Dr. Martin Gaywood, Species Project Manager at NatureScot, hailed the progress as a testament to the power of science-backed conservation: "We’ve made huge strides for wildcat conservation in Scotland, and we now have the science and evidence to back up our theory that wildcats can be restored through careful planning, breeding and release." Echoing this sentiment, Dr. Helen Senn of RZSS emphasized the project’s early success against considerable odds.
The resurgence of Scottish wildcats not only represents a milestone for conservation biology but also revives an iconic part of Scotland’s natural heritage. As breeding females give birth to new litters in the wild, hopes rise that a sustainable population can once again flourish, safeguarding these elusive "highland tigers" for generations to come.
