May III has officially resigned from his position following a federal indictment tied to charges of child sexual exploitation. May, a Republican member representing District 88 and co-founder of the ultra-conservative South Carolina Freedom Caucus, stepped down nearly two months after being indicted on ten federal counts related to the distribution of child sexual abuse material. The charges stem from allegations that in 2024, May used a personal messaging application to send and receive illicit videos and messages involving child sexual abuse.
The South Carolina House Speaker’s Office confirmed May’s resignation on August 11, 2025, releasing a formal resignation letter in which May stated that stepping down was in the best interest of his family and constituents. “It has been an honor to serve the people of District 88,” he wrote, concluding his letter with a request for immediate acceptance of his resignation.
Following his indictment in June, May was suspended from his legislative duties. Prosecutors have indicated that he faces severe penalties if convicted, including a prison sentence that could extend up to twenty years, fines reaching $250,000, and a mandatory supervised release period following incarceration.
